Municipal Risk Assessment

In a project carried out with leaves off, we assessed the risk of 256 mature trees--mostly silver maples--in a small community. The trees' health and stability were analyzed using two different sets of criteria, and a complete photographic record was created. It became apparent that crown damage from an ice storm 15-20 years in the past had sent many of the trees into decline. The recommendation was that 40% of the trees needed to be removed, and strategies were proposed for managing budgets and public relations.
